National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute The National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute-- the first and only nationally-recognized research and training institute operated by the blind for the blind. MentoringNational Center for Mentoring Excelence, (NCME) A nation-wide program designed to promote networking among blind individuals by matching blind mentors and mentees of common interest and life aspirations. NFB Net offers a variety of services to members and interested persons. One can join various blindness discussion groups, and access a variety of of material both blindness and non-blindness related. National Federation of the Blind Independence Matrket-- the store of the National Federation of the Blind offering a wide variety of aids and appliances for the blind, NFB Literature and other items for purchass from the National Center for the Blind. International Braille and Technology Center, (IBTC) A one-of-a-kind center shocasing various computer and other devices that allow the blind to live independnet lives, have greater access to information, and to assist in creating employment opportunities for blind individuals. Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader The first hand-held reading device which gives the blind imediate access to printed documents by converting a photographic image of the document to spoken text. Developed in Missouri The Voice of the Diabetic has become the leading publication for blind diabetics, their families, medical, and other professionals. A series of inspirational booklets depicting the everyday lives of blind individuals. A publication of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri containing information about blindness, its challenges, and the work of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri. A collection of classic banquet and other speeches delivered by NFB presidents and leaders during the annual convention of the National Federation of the Blind Convention. Resolutions adopted during these conventions can also be found here. A collection of literature produced by the National Federation of the Blind. Many publications can be accessed online. Others can be ordered from the NFB'S Independence Market. A collection of liter aimed at difference audiences such as blind individuals, new NFB Affiliates, Parents and educators of blind children, blind seenior citizens, rehabilitation professionals, blind students, employers, and many more. The following links allow you to learn about blindness-related resources in Missouri. The Missouri School for the Blind, (St.Louis, Missouri.) Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, (DESE) The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, (DESE) coordinates and administers education initiatives throughout the state of Missouri. Among its many services this organization administers the Blindness Skills Professionals Program. Information about Missouri State and Federal legislation can be accessed by following this link. Missouri Wolfner Library for the Blind The Wolfner Library for the Blind operates the Braille and talking bookprogram of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped of Missouri. Its services are available to Missourians who due to blindness or some other physical disability are unable to read printed material. Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, (RFB&D) This is the nation's oldest and largest producer of textbooks and other material in recorded format. Member ship for their services is required. A nation-wide library of volunteer-produced books available from their portal to eligeable members. NFB Newsline for the Blind newspapers can also be accessed via Bookshare.org. An annual subscription is required. A World-Wide colllection of classic literature and historical documents freely available to interested individuals. This collection can be accessed free of charge anywhere in the World. Another collection of literature, documents, and material freely available to individuals and educators. This service is similar to Project Gootenburg. NFB Training CentersBlindness: Learning in New Dimentions, (BLIND INC.) The NFb's training center located in Minniapolis Minnesota. Along with all NFB training centers BLIND Inc's program is based on the NFB's Civil Rights Model of rehabilitation and employs Structured-Discovery Learn in its curriculum. The Colorado Center is located in Littleton Colorado and provides the same high-quality orientationa nd adjustment to blindness as do the other NFB Centers. Louisiana Center for the Blind Begun in 1985 the Louisiana Center for the Blind was the first of our three centers to be established. It is located in Ruston Louisiana. Missouri Rehabilitation Services for the Blind, (RSB) A part of the Missouri Department of Social Services, this agency administers a variety of rehabilitation and other programs for blind Missourians including services to blind children, the newly blind, the seenior blind, as well as blindness prevention. It also operates the Missouri Business Enterprise Program, (BEP.) Blindness Professionals TrainingThese links lead to information concerning training offered in partnership with leading universities for blind rehabilitation professionals and educators of blind children. Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness This Institute provides leadership in creating programs and conducting research that recognizes the socially constructed assumptions underpinning the current structure of the blindness system and research being done on blindness. As a result, the Institute on Blindness provides alternative programs and research that expands the boundaries of the blindness National Blindness Professional Certification Board, (NBPCB) The National Blindness Professionals Certification Board currently offers a certificate in Orientation and Mobility for the blind. In addition the NBPCB provides recertification and continuing education programs to certificants. Self HelpHere are a number of resources for those dealing with loss of sight. They include how-to books and other resources to benefit the newly-blind. Blind Rehabilitation Specialist Announces Availability of New BookLewis and Clark Chapter Member and independent author Fred Olver of St. Lewis recently launched his new book: Dealing With Vision Loss. Assistive TechnologyThese links allow you to access information concerning the availablity, and procurement of access technology and common house-hold appliances and other devices used by the blind. The International Braille and Technology Center includes an exhibit of common house-hold appliances and oother electronic devices use d for everyday living. This listing features appliances and devices that can be used independenty by a blind person with little or no assistance. The mission of Missouri Assistive Technology is to increase access to assistive technology for Missourians with all types of disabilities, (Including blindness) to individuals of all ages.
